Constella (Linaclotide)

Constella is a medication used to treat certain bowel disorders. It works by increasing the amount of water in the intestine, which helps to soften the stool and make it easier to pass. Constella(Linaclotide) is also thought to help reduce the amount of time the intestine takes to move stool through the digestive tract.

Constella (Linaclotide) Medication information:

What is Constella?

Each capsule contains 290 micrograms of linaclotide. The active substance in Constella, linaclotide, attaches to some receptors in the gut called guanylate cyclase C. By attaching to these receptors, it reduces pain and increases the secretion of fluid into the gut, thereby loosening the stools and increasing bowel movements.

What is Constella (Linaclotide) used for?

Constella contains the active substance Linaclotide. It is used to treat the symptoms of moderate to severe irritable bowel syndrome (often just called “IBS”) with constipation in adult patients.

IBS is a common gut disorder. The main symptoms of IBS with constipation include:

  • Stomach or abdominal pain.
  • Feeling bloated,
  • Infrequent, hard, small, or pellet-like stools (feces).

How does Constella work?

Constella acts locally in your gut, helping you to feel less pain and less bloated, and to restore the normal functioning of your bowels. It is not absorbed into the body but attaches to a receptor called guanylate cyclase C on the surface of your gut. Attaching to this receptor blocks the sensation of pain and allows liquid to enter the body into the gut, thereby loosening the stools and increasing your bowel movements.
