Dostinex is used to treat excessive prolactin hormone levels in the body. Women with high levels of prolactin may experience symptoms such as unwanted breast milk and missed periods, as well as trouble conceiving. Men with high prolactin levels may have symptoms such as swollen breasts and diminished sexual ability/desire. Dostinex (Cabergoline) Medication Information:

What is Dostinex?

It is a dopamine receptor antagonist that is used to treat a hormonal imbalance in which the blood contains too much prolactin (also called hyperprolactinemia).

Dostinex Uses:

This medicine is used to treat excessive prolactin hormone levels in the body. Women with high levels of prolactin may experience symptoms such as unwanted breast milk and missed periods, as well as trouble conceiving.

Men with high prolactin levels may have symptoms such as swollen breasts and diminished sexual ability/desire. Cabergoline is an ergot medicine that acts by preventing the pituitary gland from secreting prolactin.

Dostinex Dosage and Directions:

Directions

Take this medication orally with or without food, usually twice a week or as directed by your doctor.

Dosage

Dostinex tablets are prescribed at a dose of 0.25mg twice a week to begin treatment. Depending on the patient's blood prolactin level, the dosage can be increased by 0.25mg twice weekly up to 1mg twice weekly. A cardiovascular evaluation should be undertaken before starting medication, and echocardiography should be considered to check for valvular disease.

To allow the physician to analyze the patient's response to each dosage level, dosage increase should not occur more frequently than every four weeks.

If the patient does not respond satisfactorily and higher dosages provide no additional benefit, the lowest dose that produced the maximum response should be used.

Dostinex Side Effects:

Nausea, vomiting, stomach trouble, constipation, dizziness, light-headedness, or exhaustion are all possible side effects. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if any of these side effects persist or worsen.

If you develop a persistent cough, mental/mood changes (such as nervousness), unusual strong urges (such as increased gambling, increased sexual urges), vision changes, painful menses, breast pain, or symptoms of heart failure (such as shortness of breath, swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, unusual/sudden weight gain), contact your doctor right away.

If you experience any serious side effects, such as chest pain or indicators of renal problems (such as a change in the volume of urine or lower back/flank pain), seek medical attention right once.

Dostinex Precautions:

If you are allergic to Cabergoline or other ergot medicines (such as Ergotamine) or any other allergies, notify your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. Inactive chemicals may be included in this product, causing allergic reactions or other issues. For further information, speak with your pharmacist.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have ever had a liver illness, high blood pressure (hypertension), heart valve disease, or abnormal scarring/thickening of the lining in the lungs/heart/behind the abdomen (pulmonary/pericardial/retroperitoneal fibrosis) before taking this medication.

This medicine should only be taken during pregnancy if necessary. Consult your doctor about the dangers and advantages.

This medicine does not appear to transfer into breast milk. This medicine, however, may affect the production of breast milk. It is not advised to breastfeed while taking this medication. Before you start breastfeeding, talk to your doctor.

Storage:

Store at controlled room temperature 20°to 25°C (68°to 77°F).

Dostinex Drug Interactions:

Drug interactions can change your current medications to perform differently or put you at risk for dangerous adverse effects. This list does not include all potential medication interactions.

Antipsychotic medications (such as chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thiothixene), lorcaserin, metoclopramide, and prochlorperazine are some of the items that may interact with these medications.

Other medications may interfere with eliminating cabergoline from your body, causing cabergoline to work differently. Some azole antifungals (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole, and posaconazole), cobicistat, and HIV protease inhibitors (such as ritonavir and saquinavir), to name a few, are examples.
