Restasis (Cyclosporine)
Restasis eye drop medicine is used to treat eye diseases such as dry eye syndrome. It works by increasing the production of tears naturally and reducing eye inflammation. However, it can take time to see maximum results. Consistent use of the medicine can increase tear production in 3-6 months. Results can vary from person to person. Always use the eye drops as recommended by your physician. Never use the medicine in larger amounts or for a long time. You can buy Restasis online in two forms: single-use vials and multidose bottles.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs):
What is Restasis?
Restasis is an eye drop medicine used to treat chronic dry eye conditions caused by inflammation. Restasis also helps to increase the eyes’ natural ability to produce tears. It is an emulsion-based eye drop (an oily liquid mixture) so it remains on the surface of the eyes for a longer period and is more effective than other eye drops. Restasis is a prescription medication, thus it is always advised to use the eye drop as prescribed by the doctor.
The medication is not recommended to patients younger than 18 years old and to treat type 1 diabetes.
Uses and Benefits of Restasis
Restasis is specifically prescribed to treat chronic dry eye syndrome. In this syndrome, the production of tears is reduced due to the inflammation in the eyes. Dry eye syndrome is caused by several factors including advanced age, certain medical conditions such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, some medications like diuretics, antihistamines and sleeping pills, eye diseases, use of contact lenses, and constant use of a computer monitor. Dry eye syndrome can result in a range of symptoms, including:
-
Burning sensation and dryness in the eyes
-
Increased eye sensitivity to light, smoke, and wind
-
Redness of the eyes
-
Eye fatigue
-
Pain in the eyes
-
Blurred and double vision
-
Deterioration of eyesight
Restasis eye drop contains the active ingredient cyclosporine. It works by reducing the inflammation in the eye and increasing tear production. This adds lubrication to the eyes and reduces redness, itchiness, and discomfort.
Side Effects of Restasis
Some people may experience mild side effects after using Restasis such as burning, eye redness, eye pain, itching, stinging, discharge, watery eyes, foreign body sensation, and blurred vision. These side effects are temporary and go away after some time.
Restasis rarely causes serious allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
If you notice any allergic reaction or milder side effects that persist for a longer duration, contact your doctor immediately.
How to use Restasis?
Restasis is only for external use and comes in two forms - Restasis single-use vials (0.4 mL) and Restasis multidose bottles (5.5 mL). Doctors recommend one drop of Restasis in each eye twice a day, about 12 hours apart. Consistent use of the eye drop for 3 months also increases eyes' natural tear production. However, results may vary from individual to individual.
Things to remember before using Restasis
-
Store Restasis at 59 to 77°F in a cool and dry place.
-
Wash your hand with soap just before using the eye drop.
-
Do not touch the tip of the vial to your eye or any other surfaces, to prevent contamination.
-
Never use Restasis while wearing contact lenses. Always remove contact lenses before using Restasis, and wait for 15 minutes before putting the lenses back in the eyes.
-
Do not drive or use machines just after using Restasis as it may cause blurring of vision for some time.
Drug Interactions
Restasis can interact with other medications and vaccines such as Rotavac Oral Vaccine, Rubella, and Measles Vaccine. This can cause some serious side effects. Therefore, it is always advised to share with doctors all about your health conditions and all over-the-counter and prescription medications including health supplements and eye drops.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should talk to your doctor about the safety of Restasis before using it. As of now, Alcohol is not known to interact with Restasis. However, if you consume alcohol frequently, consult with your doctor before using Restasis.
