Symbicort Inhaler (Budesonide/Formoterol)

A steroid and a long-acting bronchodilator are combined in Symbicort (Budesonide and Formoterol) to avoid bronchospasm in persons with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is suggested for the prevention of COPD flare-ups and the maintenance treatment of airflow restriction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema.

Symbicort is not recommended for treating severe bronchospasm. It facilitates breathing by decreasing inflammation and widening the airways and lungs. It comes in a metered-dose inhaler (MDI), which can be used as needed but is commonly used twice daily.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs):

What is Symbicort Inhaler?

Symbicort Inhaler medication is used to treat and prevent wheezing and shortness of breath brought on by asthma or a chronic lung condition known as COPD, which also includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The active ingredients of the drug are Budesonide and Formoterol. Budesonide is a drug that belongs to the subclass of corticosteroid medications. It functions in a way that reduces edema and inflammation of the airways. The latter is a member of the group of drugs referred to as long-acting beta-agonists. It works by relaxing the muscles that enclose the airways, enabling them to open and permitting simpler breathing.

Uses and Benefits of Symbicort Inhaler:

  • Symbicort is used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on a long-term basis. This is not a rescue inhaler.

  • To treat asthma in people aged 6 and older whose condition is not effectively controlled by a long-term asthma drug, such as an inhaled corticosteroid, or whose asthma requires both an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA).

  • Additionally, it has been licensed for the maintenance (long-term) treatment of COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both, as well as to lessen COPD flare-ups.

  • When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (like Formoterol) may sporadically increase the risk of severe (and occasionally fatal) asthma-related respiratory problems. However, drugs like this one that combines long-acting beta-agonists and inhaled corticosteroids do not increase the risk of severe asthma-related breathing problems.

Side Effects of Symbicort Inhaler:

  • Headaches with a sore throat

  • Irregular bowels

  • Rise in blood pressure

  • Rarely, this medicine may cause severe, abrupt deterioration of asthma or breathing issues right after usage.

  • Patchy tongue

  • Mood alterations

  • Trouble sleeping/ Irregular sleeping patterns

  • Blurry vision

  • Increased thirst

  • Muscle cramps

  • Tremors

  • Allergic rashes

  • Itching or swellings

How to use Symbicort Inhaler?

  • If your doctor has ordered two puffs, wait at least a minute between each one. If you are using other inhalers at the same time, take this medication last and wait at least a minute between doses.

  • To prevent oral yeast infections, dry mouth, and hoarseness, gargle, rinse your mouth with water, and spit out after each use. Do not consume the rinse water.

  • Use a dry towel to clean the inhaler once a week.

  • The dosage will be based on your medical condition and how you respond to treatment. Use this medication frequently to get the most out of it.

  • This medication functions best when used frequently. Use it at regular intervals throughout the day to improve memory.

  • If you are using the inhaler for the first time if it has been more than 7 days since you last used it, or if it was dropped, follow the instructions for priming the device. To avoid getting medicine in your eyes while priming the inhaler, make careful to spray away from your face.

  • Before each usage, give the inhaler a good five-second shake. As prescribed by your doctor, inhale this drug by mouth often twice daily (generally in the morning and evening, separated by 12 hours).

Drug Interactions:

  • Antibiotics, antifungal drugs, MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, beta-blockers, or diuretics (water pills) may interact with Symbicort.

  • Aldesleukin and mifepristone are a few of the items that could interact with this medication.

  • Strong cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors.

  • Beta-blockers

  • Diuretics

Safety Information:

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any other allergies before using this drug, including those to budesonide, Formoterol, or arformoterol.

  • This drug might conceal infection symptoms. It can increase your risk of contracting an infection or aggravate an existing one. Avoid contact with someone who has an infection that can spread quickly, such as the flu, COVID-19, measles, or chickenpox.

  • If you just switched from an oral corticosteroid (such as prednisone tablets) to this inhaler or if you've been taking this drug in higher-than-normal doses for a while, it might be harder for your body to respond to physical stress.

  • This medication has the potential to momentarily slow down a child's growth if used over an extended period of time. However, poorly controlled asthma can also obstruct growth.

  • Only use of this medication during pregnancy should be strictly essential. Describe to your doctor the benefits and drawbacks.

  • Breast milk can contain budesonide. If Formoterol enters breast milk is a mystery. Before breastfeeding, speak with your doctor.

  • Speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

How does Symbicort Inhaler work?
