Valtrex (Valacyclovir)

Valtrex is a medication that is used to treat viral infections. Cold sores around the mouth (produced by herpes simplex) and chickenpox are treated with it in children (caused by varicella zoster). It is used to treat shingles (herpes zoster) and cold sores around the mouth in adults. It is also used to treat genital herpes outbreaks. This medicine is intended to limit the number of future outbreaks in persons who have recurrent outbreaks. Valacyclovir is a type of antiviral medication. It inhibits the spread of certain viruses. It is not, however, a treatment for these infections. Even between outbreaks, the viruses that cause these ailments live on in the body. The use of Valtrex reduces the severity and duration of these outbreaks.
